Calculation Methods

Understanding Prayer Time Calculations

Islamic prayer times are calculated based on the sun’s position. Different calculation methods use slightly different angles for Fajr and Isha, which explains why prayer times can vary between mosques and apps.

Our Method: Umm al-Qura (Makkah)

We use the Umm al-Qura University, Makkah calculation method (Method 4) for all locations. This is the official method used in Saudi Arabia and many Muslim countries worldwide.

Method Fajr Angle Isha Angle Commonly Used In
Umm al-Qura 18.5° 90 mins after Maghrib Saudi Arabia, Gulf Countries
Muslim World League 18° 17° Europe, parts of Asia
Islamic Society of North America 15° 15° North America
Egyptian General Authority 19.5° 17.5° Africa, Middle East

Note: Local mosques may adjust times slightly for congregation (jama’ah) schedules. Always follow your local mosque announcements for congregational prayer times.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why are prayer times different between cities? +
Prayer times vary based on geographical location, timezone, and local sunrise/sunset times. Our system calculates times specifically for your location using the Umm al-Qura method, which accounts for your exact latitude and longitude.
Which calculation method do you use? +
We use the Umm al-Qura University calculation method (Method 4) for all locations. This is the same method used in Saudi Arabia and is widely accepted internationally. It uses 18.5° for Fajr and 90 minutes after Maghrib for Isha.
How accurate are the Hijri dates? +
Hijri dates are calculated based on the official Umm al-Qura calendar system used in Saudi Arabia. They update automatically at Maghrib time each day according to the Islamic lunar calendar. For dates beyond the current month, we use astronomical calculations.
Is my location data stored? +
No, we do not store any location data. Your coordinates are used only to calculate prayer times and are not saved to any server. All calculations happen locally in your browser whenever possible.
Why are some prayer cards highlighted? +
When viewing today’s date, we highlight the current prayer with a green border and the next prayer with a special glow. This helps you quickly identify which prayer is currently active and which one is coming up next.
Can I use this offline? +
You need an internet connection to search for cities and get initial prayer times. However, once loaded, the countdowns and date navigation work offline. For best results, we recommend using this tool with an active internet connection.
How often are prayer times updated? +
Prayer times are calculated in real-time whenever you search for a location or change the date. There are no cached times, so you always get the most accurate calculations based on current astronomical data.
